Chapter Eight
âMy heart is and always will be yoursâ
Jane Austen ~ Sense and Sensibility
Official or Unofficial
As soon as the filming was over, the contestants were given the chance to speak with the judges and members of the audience in a more informal setting. This was followed by a short photo shoot on the set. As the studio began to clear, Gigi asked Elizabeth and Caroline to accompany her to her office. Gigiâs office was a posh suite which overlooked the hustle and bustle of Media Village located in the West End of London. Unsurprising, the room was equipped with a fully functional kitchen. The black and white modern décor was accented with splashes of red, but the effect was inviting rather than cold and sterile. The back wall was filled with awards and photographs of famous dignitaries and master chefs. Elizabeth was drawn to an informal family picture which displayed Gigi, William, Lady Anne, and she assumed Williamâs father.
Caroline also noticed the same picture and remarked, âIsnât this William Darcy, one of Londonâs most eligible bachelors? Hmm ⦠nice muscles,â she groaned.
âMiss Bingley, please be aware that my familyâs association with the network and related shows is purely professional. It is unlikely you will have the chance to meet my brother, if that is what you are implying.â By this time Gigi had dropped her French accent and was glaring at the woman who had been gawking at Williamâs picture.
âYour brother and my third cousin, Charles Bingley, happen to be very good friends,â Caroline drawled. âHe promised to introduce us and I expect to hear from him any day now since I am no longer in the competition.â
Over my dead body, sister! Elizabeth could hardly believe the nerve of this woman and had it been under different circumstances she would have let Caroline have a piece of her mind.
âMiss Bingley, at present you are the alternate winner of Another Slice should Miss Bennet not be able to compete in Bordeaux. Therefore, I suggest you discard that thought.â
Elizabethâs stomach suddenly churned, knowing how she and William had struggled to keep their relationship private for the past six weeks. I wonder what Gigi will say when she finds out about us.
âMs. DuPaix,â Elizabeth interjected. âBefore we go any further, I need to tell you that with my coursework and internship finishing in December, Iâm not certain if I will be available for the March bake off should I become the winner of the baking competition when we convene again in Bordeaux. At this point in time, I think it would be best if I forfeited my position as Weekend Prime Baker to Miss Bingley. Please forgive me if I have inconvenienced you or the network in any way. If I had known about the additional competition, I never would have entered Another Slice.â
A surprised expression flashed across Gigiâs face upon hearing Elizabethâs statements. Quickly recovering she said, âIâm sorry to hear that, Miss Bennet. You are deserving of the title and would have made an excellent addition to our next competition.
